Outdoor Classroom
Ecology
Our Trail has always been a great place to have fun. And with the addition of The Outdoor Classroom, it’ll also be a great place to learn. This new attraction will be filled with compelling visual displays and focus on water ecology, natural and social history, birds, bugs, and other awe-inspiring topics. It’s being designed to engage everyone from kids to kids at heart.
What You’ll See
A wide variety of plant and animal species live along our Trail. Ducks, beavers, deer, foxes and even bears are just a few of the animals that you might spot along the Trail. These animals are wild, and that while it is fine to respectfully look, please DO NOT feed or touch the animals.
If you see wildlife of note along the Trail, please email pictures to us at hvrta@taconic.net and let us know the date, time, location and comments you have about the sighting. We may post your submission on our social media.
We performed an extensive survey of plant life along the Trail and created a brochure to share our findings. You can download the brochure here.
Railroad Relics
Having been built along the former Harlem Line of the New York Central Railroad, our Trail is rich in history. Along the Trail you can see former railroad stations and other relics. Interpretive signs highlight railroad, community, and natural history. You also can visit individual Trail section pages online for more information about local history and the flora and fauna in different segments of the Trail.
